  • accountancy – info about the career?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under accountancy service | 3 Comments »

it’s a job i’ve been considering given the pay is said to be good, it doesn’t seem too stressful (no targets, etc) and it seems (at least vaguely) relavent to my degree…

i’d like some more info about the job itself, how to start out…i know there are official exams to be taken but is it usual to get companies to sponsor you through these exams/employ you whilst you do them…? what could i expect as a starting salary? am i right in saying it’s not very stressful?

i’m 23, will have a degree in statistics in about 18 months, i’m fluent in spanish and have the following work experience: 2 years as a marketing assistant, one year as a duty manager of a bookkeepers, one year as a bank cashier and 2 years working on the customer service desk at a supermarket…so lacking in accountancy…is it is learnable right?

all info would be very much appreciated!

There are a few different ways to start out. You can go through the apprentiship way, which is basically learning and taking any relevant exams as your working, usually your employer will pay all if not most of any course costs and exam costs. There is a place called AAT, they offer these kind of work and learn courses – oyu work 5 days a week like you would in a normal office and then one or two evenings a week you go to lessons at a local college. Pay is very basic, you’d only earn about £8,000 a year depending on who emplyoes you but that is what you could expect to be paid in a apprenticeship based job.

You could go in as a accounting assistant, and work your way up from the bottom. You learn on the job without the need for exams and evening classes. Your previous experience would definatily help you, you have the knowledge there looking for. The pay is much though averaging at about £12,000 -£15,000 a year. But after a few years you could be looking at something more towards £22,000 – £25,000 as you gain experience and maybe move up the career ladder.

There are a good few oppurtunities to learn accountancy, if you wanted to start right in at a career with a good salary you would probabily need to study accountancy and find work part time at an accountants.
