Softline Pastel – a member of the Softline Group and a local leader in accounting, payroll and business software — has launched Pastel My Business Online, its first online accounting system, which targets small to medium businesses (SMBs).

Very often, products become complicated by the sheer volume of features added to it over time, says Softline Pastel managing director Steven Cohen (pictured right), who explained that by developing Pastel My Business Online from scratch, the company had the opportunity to design the software specifically for business owners who were either starting out with very little bookkeeping knowledge, or who only wanted a basic system.

Pastel My Business Online is a multi-user system with dashboards, graphs and drill-downs to source transactions, and we believe it will be a joy to use.

The company has integrated My Business with the Apple iPhone and Cohen reports there are plans to port it to the Blackberry and Windows Mobile platforms in the near future.

Mobility, portability

According to Softline Pastel, accounting over the Internet not only gives the user greater mobility, but extending it to mobile devices makes it even more portable.

Users can view customers sales histories and contact details and write notes while on the road, or in front of a client.

Being online also allows an accountant to log on to the system without travelling to the customers premises to check accounts.

Softline Pastel states that it has accumulated some 200 000 users during its 20 years in business; during this time it has taken users through various shifts in technology.

These include:

* transitioning from the DOS operating system to Windows,
* 16-bit to 32-bit operating system changes, and now
* accounting over the Internet

Pragmatic

When we developed Pastel My Business Online, we used all our 20 years of experience to deliver a product that was user-friendly, intuitive and fun to use. We also disciplined ourselves to keep the product clean and uncluttered, said Cohen.

He explains that Softline Pastel took a pragmatic view and used the most appropriate developer technologies and delivery mechanisms for the development of the system.

Technology continues to move at a fast pace and with the growth of Software as a Service (SaaS) and Web 2.0 technologies we had to use a platform that will have legs in the future, he added.

However, while there is no doubt that the market for SaaS applications and service based software is growing — and we expect this trend to continue — we also believe that demand is not universal. Adoption will be gradual and will vary widely across markets, as customers in different sectors have different needs. Many businesses will adopt a hybrid approach to their business software and services, using a combination of desktop and SaaS applications.

The gems and jewellery industry in India is highly fragmented with a large number of domestic private sector players. The country has around 450,000 goldsmiths, 100,000 gold jewellers, 6,000 diamond processors and 8,000 diamond jewellers.

However, with consumer consciousness increasing, the future of organised retail in India is very bright. The organised sector of the gems and jewellery industry in India is estimated to grow at 40 per cent per annum to US$ 2.2 billion by 2010. The increasingly savvy Indian consumer is becoming partial to branded jewellery which is associated with better services, premium quality products and attractive exchange policy. The growing popularity of machine-made jewellery over traditional handcrafted jewellery is also spurring the growth of the organised retail segment.

The number of gold retailers in the country has increased by 40 per cent since the year 2000, with 150 domestic and over 65 internationally established brands. Faced with the changing dynamics, traditional jewellers are looking to jump on the “brandwagon” by investing in advertising and trying to build a presence in the minds of consumers.

India dominates the diamond processing trade with 11 out of 12 diamonds being cut and polished in India. India also dominates the gold and silver consumption globally with consumption of about 800 tonnes per annum. The industry provides employment to 1.3 million people.

About 15,000 tonnes of gold is held privately in India. Gold demand in the third quarter of 2009 reached 800 tonnes, or US$ 24.7 billion, according to the World Gold Councils latest Gold Demand Trends Report”.

India is the largest consumer of gold jewellery in the world, accounting for about 20 per cent of global gold consumption.

India bought 200 metric tonnes of gold worth US$ 6.7 billion from the International Monetary Fund.
A small village town called Chavakkad in central Kerala, a southern Indian state, consumes 20 per cent of all gold sold in the country. It has more than 115 glittering gold jewellery shops.
Currently, UAE is the largest destination for gems and jewellery, accounting for 31 per cent of the total exports, followed by Hong Kong (25 per cent) and the US (20 per cent).
Diamond

Surat is Indias diamond processing hub, contributing over 80 per cent of the countrys diamond processing industry with annual revenue of around US$ 13.03 billion. In recent years, Dubai, being a port location, had developed into a diamond distribution centre in West Asia. According to industry estimates, 10-15per cent of Indias total polished diamond exports go through Dubai. The cost per carat for cutting and polishing diamond was US$ 10 in India as compared to US$ 17 in China and US$ 150 in Belgium. India is the largest resource hub in diamond cutting and processing. Low cost of labor involved in the production of finished diamonds has lured global attention, thereby resulting in the growth of the industry.

The Indian gems and jewellery recorded exports worth US$ 2.56 billion in September 2009. The industry has witnessed an upturn since March 2009, and it expects exports to move up further during the upcoming festive season in the country.

Exports in segments such as cut and polished diamonds and coloured gemstones, however, grew 17 per cent and 31 per cent respectively. The UAE, led by Dubai, is the largest destination for India’s gems and jewellery, accounting for 31 per cent of the countrys total exports.

Most business owners will realize some definite advantages if they get a software program to handle their accounting. The main purpose with accounting software is that it allows the easy production of reports verses having to sit down with manual records and trying to put together your reports. So there is not a lot of time saving when you use the accounting programs except when you get to the report level and that’s where the value comes in. As far as the type of program, what I always recommend is that people talk to their accountant before they jump into a program.

It’s so easy to buy something off the shelf and then realize after getting back to the place of business that it might not be for the company. If you have an accountant that’s familiar with your business, there is a lot of software out there that especially designed for certain industries. So if your accountant deals in your industry, he can put you in touch with the software that would be specific for your company. This will allow you to bypass a lot of the set-up time and go right into some relevant accounting helped by the accountant who is familiar with the software. Even if your accountant is not industry specific, often they have expertise in some of the more popular packages like QuickBooks or Peachtree and if they are comfortable with one or the other packages you would tend to want to go with them so they can look at your data and be able to work with you on a more one on one basis.

Customization of Forms more Professional looking than ever!

I am the CFO of a real estate law firm and have been using Quickbooks since 1999. As an accountant I understand the importance of having the financial data of a business presentable quickly and easily. For this reason I volunteered to be a beta tester of the new Quickbooks 2010 and was selected by Intuit giving me early access to the newest features!

The feature I love the most is the ability to create professional looking forms such as invoices to make an impression without having to buy preprinted forms. There are dozens of templates to choose from specific to many business categories such as tax preparers, construction, sales, etc. The template will fill your form completely with a shadow background with all of your form data printed crisply in the foreground. And, all this from your very own printer on plain paper! A tremendous cost saver over buying preprinted forms.

The only negative to the forms customization feature is the requirement that you create an online access account to store your many templates that I am sure that you will want to have! A minor negative but one that requires internet access. If you do not create the account than you will have to start the customization process over again if you want to change to a completely different template.
